Martin Luther Reformation Day ideas for elementary students

October 31st is Reformation Day, a day to celebrate Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, or the movement that led reformers to break away from the Catholic Church. I have taught kids aged 4-12 about Martin Luther and Reformation Day – and you can too! The goal of this post is to give you the resources you need to teach your students about this important day with fun and engaging activities that will help them to retain and retell what they’ve learned. These ideas are a wonderful alternative to do on Halloween.

I’ve compiled a list of suggested books, age-appropriate YouTube videos, and print-and-go resources to help you in planning your study of this very important topic.

Books:

Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed the World is a wonderful picture book that explains Luther’s courageous acts and the importance of Reformation Day, all in kid-friendly terms.

The Adventures of Martin Luther is an excellent option for those teaching young children about Martin Luther’s stand for what he believed to be true, according to the Bible.

I wanted to supplement the unit on Martin Luther and Reformation Day with activities that would both engage and challenge my students. After reading the books and watching a couple video clips, we got to work! We did reading comprehension activities, skill-based activities, an interactive notebook foldable project, and some responsive writing.

After completing the unit, I always have my students take these activities home and explain each one to someone in their family. As teachers we know that the best way to master a subject is to teach it to someone else – this connects the family to the classroom and helps solidify the information in the students’ mind.
